Gotham Football Club won their first regular season title in franchise history on Sunday. The team defeated the Utah Royals 2-0 at S.I. Stadium to claim the NWSL Shield.

This victory marks a new milestone for the Bats, who previously won two NWSL championships without holding the regular season lead. The win also served as a defensive statement. Gotham conceded only 23 goals across 30 matches this season and recorded 14 clean sheets in the league, plus one in the Challenge Cup final. This result broke an eight-game streak where the team had allowed at least one goal in every match.

The race for the top seed remained tight until the final day. San Diego Wave FC finished three points behind Gotham, while the Washington Spirit placed third, three points behind San Diego. Gotham only needed a draw against Utah to secure the title after San Diego dropped points in their previous game.

Guro Reiten scored the opening goal for Gotham from a tight angle within the first ten minutes. Later in the match, Midge Purce created the second chance. Jaedyn Shaw, returning from injury, finished the play in the 80th minute to seal the victory. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made two saves in her 11th clean sheet of the season.

The playoff brackets are now set. The top three teams, Gotham, San Diego, and Washington, will face lower seeds in the first round. Kansas City and Angel City, who tied for the most goals with 54 each, will meet in a matchup between the fourth and fifth seeds. Washington will host the sixth-seeded Portland Thorns.

The Utah Royals took the seventh seed, edging out Seattle Reign in the tiebreaker. Both teams finished with 47 points, but Utah held a plus 5 goal differential compared to Seattle's plus 4. This advantage sends the Royals to San Diego for their first game, while Seattle must travel across the country.

Seattle's first-round opponent is Gotham. The two teams have already met twice this season, with Gotham winning both regular season matchups. Their playoff game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 8.
