Netflix: New 'Stranger Things' prequel 'Other Worlds' set for 2028

Netflix has officially greenlit a live-action spinoff of its hit sci-fi series, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. The announcement landed today, November 6, during the streamer's annual Stranger Things Day celebration. The new series is scheduled to debut in 2028.

The show functions as a prequel to the original television series and the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. A released teaser sets the story in Marion, Nevada, on April 19, 1955. This timeline precedes the events of the main show, which began in 1983.

Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer are returning to the project as creators. Kate Trefry, who wrote the stage play and has worked on the original series since season 2, will serve as showrunner. Joe Wright, a BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning director, will helm the first three episodes. Production for the new series will take place in New Mexico.

The Duffer brothers described the project in a press release as a long-held dream that is now becoming a reality. They expressed gratitude for their collaborators, specifically naming Trefry and Wright. The duo noted that the new series features new settings, heroes, and villains while maintaining the core identity of the franchise.

Trefry stated that working with the Duffer brothers has been a joy since her first paying job in Hollywood. She described the process of developing the new chapter as a chance to explore more mysteries within the established universe. She expressed hope that the story would resonate with audiences by combining horror, wonder, and mystery.

The original Stranger Things series concluded its run in late 2025. Season 5 was released in three parts, with the final volume and two-hour series finale airing on December 31, 2025. The new prequel expands the franchise's narrative reach beyond the original five seasons.
