Tesla plans to stop manufacturing its Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year. CEO Elon Musk made the announcement in a social media post, explaining that the shift is necessary to create space for increased production of the company's upcoming Cybercab.
The Texas facility is the sole site where the Cybertruck is built. The vehicle, characterized by its angular stainless-steel body, has become a polarizing presence on American roads. Its unorthodox design turned it into a political symbol after Musk aligned himself with President Donald Trump and various right-leaning causes during a period of widening political division in the United States and Europe.
Market performance for the vehicle has struggled since its debut. Despite high initial anticipation, sales began to decline almost immediately. Kelley Blue Book estimated that Cybertruck sales dropped 48 percent between 2024 and 2025. From January through September of this year, sales fell another 28 percent, according to the same source. Tesla does not publicly separate sales figures by specific model.
Quality issues also plagued the vehicle in its early years. The Cybertruck faced several recalls within months of becoming available to customers. In Europe, where Tesla's brand faced additional headwinds, vehicle sales tumbled 49 percent in the first two months of 2025. This decline occurred even as the overall market for electric vehicles grew during that same period.
Musk's political moves further complicated the brand's standing in international markets. His public endorsement of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party during national elections drew broad condemnation from European consumers and analysts. These factors combined with the vehicle's high price point and niche appeal to shape its commercial trajectory in the years following its launch.
