Minnesota maintained its grip on the top of the Western Conference on Friday night, beating San Jose 4-1 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul. The victory extended the Wild's points streak to seven games and pushed the Sharks to their sixth loss in their last seven outings. The result separated the two teams clearly, with the home side taking sole possession of the first-place spot in the conference.

The Wild entered the contest with momentum, having gone 6-0-1 over their previous seven games. San Jose arrived in Minnesota after a rough stretch, having dropped 3-6-1 over their last ten games. The visitors had just suffered a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. Following that defeat, the Sharks held a players-only meeting at Crypto.com Arena to discuss their recent performance.

The Sharks appeared to respond to that meeting. Despite an early deficit, San Jose controlled much of the play for two periods. The Wild took the lead quickly, however, when Kirill Kaprizov scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 7:55 of the first period. Kaprizov one-timed a cross-pass from Quinn Hughes past goaltender Yaroslav Askarov after drawing a tripping penalty just 28 seconds into the man advantage. That goal marked his 16th of the season, the most in the league.

San Jose evened the score late in the second period. Macklin Celebrini won a faceoff and moved to the net front, where he deflected a shot from Dmitry Orlov over the right shoulder of Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt. The goal gave the Sharks a 1-1 tie at 12:17 of the second period. The momentum shifted back to Minnesota shortly after. Jacob Trouba committed interference on Matt Boldy, and 48 seconds later, Maxim Shabanov poked the puck past Askarov for a 2-1 lead at 14:15.

Wallstedt made several key stops to protect the lead, including a save on a 2-on-1 chance by Celebrini and Will Smith. The Wild increased their margin in the third period. Hughes scored at 6:55, skating free above the left circle and firing a wrist shot into the far top corner. Later, Zach Bogosian added the fourth goal for Minnesota. He collected a rebound on the right boards and shot the puck to the high far post, where it clanked in to make it 4-1.

Wallstedt finished the game with 28 saves. After blocking a shot with his left skate during a San Jose rush in the middle of the third period, the home crowd chanted his name. The Wild will look to keep their winning ways going on Saturday when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning at GCA. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
