DeLauro set to lead House Appropriations
Democratic wins in Michigan, Texas, and California shift the balance of power, clearing the path for new committee chairs.

Nancy Pelosi’s former chief of staff, DeLauro, is positioned to take command of the House Appropriations Committee. This move follows a series of confirmed results on November 4 that cement Democratic control over key legislative bodies.
The party secured decisive victories in several competitive districts across the country. In Michigan’s 4th District, state Sen. Sean McCann defeated eight-term incumbent Bill Huizenga. Huizenga had won the Kalamazoo seat by 12 points in 2024, but McCann’s win reverses the local Republican advantage.
Democrats also flipped other Michigan districts. Christina Hines defeated Michael Bouchard in the 10th District, a seat previously held by John James who ran for governor. William Lawrence beat freshman Rep. Tom Barrett in the 7th District, taking the Lansing-based seat that Barrett had won by four points in the previous cycle.
In Washington state, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez won a third term in the 3rd District. She defeated Republican state Senate Minority Leader John Braun in a traditionally right-leaning area that voted for President Donald Trump by three points in 2024.
Texas saw a shift in the 9th District where Leticia Gutierrez defeated Alex Mealer. This district was a primary target of the state’s redistricting plan intended to bolster Republican numbers. The loss for the GOP coincided with Democratic sweeps in statewide races across the state.
California experienced changes in three districts following state-level redistricting. Adam Gray won the 13th District with a comfortable margin after winning by only 187 votes in 2024. In the 22nd District, Randy Villegas ousted David Valadao. The new district boundaries include a two-thirds Hispanic voting population. Angela Gonzales-Torres defeated incumbent Jimmy Gomez in the 34th District in a primary contest.
Gomez faced a House Ethics Committee investigation over sexual misconduct allegations from a former staffer, a charge he denied. In New York, Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen retained their seats in the 3rd and 4th districts, respectively, after defeating their Republican challengers.
