The University of Minnesota women's hockey team will field an incomplete roster this weekend as it travels to Duluth for a two-game series against the Bulldogs. Three players will sit out while representing their countries at the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship. The absence creates immediate challenges for both coaching staffs as they attempt to maintain competitive balance against a rival also missing key contributors.
Junior defenseman Chloe Primerano, junior forward Julia Schalin, and sophomore forward Tereza Plosova will not play. Primerano is with Team Canada, Schalin represents Finland, and Plosova plays for Czechia. Head coach Greg May acknowledged the difficulty of losing personnel mid-season. "I just don't know if it's fair to the teams and the athletes to have to do this in the midyear every year," May said. Despite the disruption, he expressed confidence that the Gophers' depth will allow the team to adapt quickly to the new lineup.
Primerano's departure requires specific defensive adjustments because she leads Minnesota defensemen in points with eight. Senior defender Molly Jordan noted that she has built strong chemistry with Primerano during the season. Jordan believes the team can compensate for the loss. "Everyone needs to step up and play with the girls," Jordan said. Sophomore forward Bella Fanale added that having more options on the ice reduces individual pressure. "It makes us be able to play free for sure and not have as much pressure on ourselves," Fanale said.
The University of Minnesota Duluth will also play shorthanded. Forward Caitlin Kraemer and goaltender Eve Gascon will miss the series. Gascon has been the Bulldogs' primary goaltender, allowing only two goals in five games. She holds the lowest goals-against average in the NCAA and has recorded four shutouts. Kraemer is UMD's top offensive threat with seven goals and nine points, a team high. Her absence leaves a notable gap in the Bulldogs' attacking options.
Minnesota enters this matchup after recent wins and losses against other opponents. The Gophers split a pair of games against Ohio State and swept Lindenwood. The team aims to maintain its recent momentum while integrating backup players into the lineup. The series will test how quickly both programs can fill the roles left vacant by their absent stars.
The Gophers and Bulldogs will begin the series on Friday at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth. The two teams will conclude the contest on Saturday. Both coaches have emphasized the importance of depth and team cohesion in the absence of their top performers.
