Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson addressed reporters on Thursday at the TCO Performance Center to discuss the team's offensive output. He spoke after a 19-15 loss to the Detroit Lions on the previous Sunday, a game that marked the Vikings' first defeat of the season. Jefferson skipped the postgame press conference in Detroit, an occurrence that has happened only once before in his career. During that game, cameras captured him screaming on the sideline.
The offense has underperformed in recent weeks. The Vikings currently rank 27th in the league with 20.0 points per game. They also sit 29th in yards per game at 279.4 and 31st in offensive touchdowns per game at 1.6. Head coach Kevin O'Connell defended the frustration displayed by his players following the loss. O'Connell stated that the team wants to win and that he does not fault the competitiveness shown by the roster.
Jefferson expressed his own dissatisfaction with the team's execution. He noted that opportunities for him to catch passes are visible in game footage, yet the ball does not arrive. He described the group of players as special but felt the team was wasting that potential by failing to execute the plays called. Jefferson maintained that he is always a competitor who wants to win, regardless of the season's standing.
The conversation naturally turned to starting quarterback Kyler Murray, who is struggling to find rhythm. Jefferson said he believes Murray is growing and becoming more comfortable with the system. He asserted that Murray is capable of making the necessary throws. Jefferson did not blame Murray for the offensive struggles, focusing instead on the collective execution of the unit.
Murray is currently nursing a hamstring strain and will miss Monday's game against the Buffalo Bills at U.S. Bank Stadium. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz is scheduled to start in his place. Wentz acknowledged the difficulty of Jefferson's situation. He stated that he would be frustrated in Jefferson's position and that he wants to get the ball to him without forcing the throws. Wentz expressed confidence that Jefferson will get targets during the upcoming week.
Jefferson's statistical output has been inconsistent this season. In his past 18 games played, he has recorded more than 100 receiving yards only once. He currently has 28 receptions for 225 yards. This pace does not project him to reach 1,000 yards, a milestone he has achieved in previous seasons. His patience appears to be wearing thin, a sentiment he conveyed through his silence in Detroit and his comments this week.
The Vikings face the Bills on Monday. The offensive unit must improve its ranking in points, yards, and touchdowns to stabilize the team's standing. Jefferson said the team needs to find an answer quickly. He ended his remarks by emphasizing the urgency of the situation for the squad.
