Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice filed for bankruptcy in Texas on Wednesday, listing $3.5 million in debts. The filing outlines financial obligations tied to civil litigation regarding a high-speed car crash and accusations of assault by an ex-girlfriend. Rice, 26, reported $677,054 in personal assets, which includes $421,825 in deferred compensation.

The largest creditor in the filing is owed $979,837. This figure relates to an agreement concerning Rice's role in the 2024 crash in Dallas. The incident injured several people and led to a six-game suspension from the NFL. Rice is currently in the final year of a four-year rookie contract worth $6.5 million in total, with a base salary of $1.6 million for the 2026 season.

Rice is disputing potential debts in ongoing civil cases. The filing lists $700,000 in total claims from crash victims. Another $200,000 in claims comes from an ex-girlfriend who alleged Rice assaulted her multiple times between 2023 and 2025. The NFL did not sanction Rice for the assault accusations.

Rice pleaded guilty to third-degree felony charges for collision with bodily injury and for racing on a highway that caused bodily injury. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of probation. Earlier this year, Rice served an additional 30 days in jail for violating probation after testing positive for marijuana.

The former SMU player has recorded 20 receptions for 243 yards and two touchdowns this season. He established himself as a rookie in 2023 with 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during the year the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.

The next step in the legal process involves the resolution of the disputed civil claims listed in the bankruptcy petition. The court will review the active debts and assets to determine the distribution of funds to creditors.
