Family members and local residents in Palm Beach County received a grim update on Tuesday regarding the private jet that crashed last week. Federal investigators confirmed that the aircraft likely disintegrated in the air before striking the ground. This determination changes the focus of the recovery effort from a single impact crater to a wide debris field spanning nearly four miles.

Tom Chapman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, announced the findings at a press conference. He stated that a section of the tail was located 3.8 miles from the main impact site. Chapman identified this distance as critical evidence of an in-flight breakup. The specific component found at that range was the elevator, the control surface responsible for directing the nose of the plane upward or downward.

The recovered elevator was broken into three separate pieces. Chapman explained that without a functional elevator, the pilots lost the primary mechanism to counteract a nosedive. He noted that the loss of this part directs the investigation toward other potential causes of the failure. "The function of the elevator is to control the pitch up and down," Chapman said. He added that knowing the part was lost is a very important piece of evidence for pointing the team toward other things to investigate.

Cockpit voice recordings and radio transmissions provide a timeline for the final moments of the flight. Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, the 20-year-old co-pilot, reported to air traffic controllers that ice was accumulating on the aircraft. She also described severe turbulence that caused the jet to fluctuate in altitude by more than 700 feet. Her messages indicated a rapid descent before the Learjet 60, traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, struck the ground and erupted in flames.

All nine people on board died in the crash. The victims included pilot Jeff Gregory, 55, and co-pilot Filgueiras. The passengers were Adam Robinson and Helen Sharp, a couple from Austin, along with their children Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2. Three other adults were also aboard: Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr, and Anita Maria Cetina. Friends of Gregory said they believe his voice can be heard reciting the Lord's Prayer in the background of the cockpit audio during the descent.

Filgueiras held her pilot's license before she obtained her driver's license. She was a high school senior in Boca Raton three years ago when she was interviewed by local media. The investigation continues as teams comb the area for additional fragments that may explain how the tail separated from the fuselage.
