Allan Filgueiras defended his daughter Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras on Friday, stating that she was fully qualified to serve as co-pilot on the Learjet that crashed in Florida on Sunday. The 20-year-old pilot died along with eight other passengers and crew members when the aircraft broke apart during a thunderstorm.

The father, who is also a pilot, reviewed the final radio transmissions from the cockpit multiple times. He reported that Nathalia calmly communicated the buildup of ice on the plane to air traffic control as the jet entered turbulence. The aircraft dropped 200 meters and entered an overspeed condition, descending at a rate of 20,000 feet per minute. Filgueiras said the recording demonstrated his daughter's composure in the face of a rapidly escalating emergency.

The family organized the press event to counter online skepticism about the co-pilot's age. Nathalia held a commercial pilot license and had accumulated more than 1,300 hours of flight experience. Her attorney, Stuart Grossman, described her as a top-performing student in her training program. He confirmed that the family had no immediate plans to file a lawsuit against the airline or the manufacturer.

Aviation safety expert John Cox, CEO of Safety Operating Systems, noted that he began his professional flying career at age 19. He argued that earning a seat in the cockpit of a Lear 60 required a pilot to demonstrate high skill levels to impress senior crew members. Cox stated that the co-pilot position in that aircraft type is a respected role in the industry.

The National Transportation Safety Board has not yet determined the cause of the crash. Debris from the tail section was recovered kilometers from the main crash site, indicating the plane exceeded its design speed limits while falling. The victims included technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young children, and nanny Ana María Ramírez Cetina. The pilot in command, Jeff Gregory, was 55 years old.

Filgueiras said his daughter fought to control the aircraft until the very end. He described the loss as a personal heartbreak but expressed pride in how she handled the crisis. He said her actions defined her as a hero in the eyes of her family.
