Amy Klobuchar has committed to keeping Minnesota tax rates steady as the state government shifts back to Democratic-Farmer-Labor control for the third time since 2013. The governor-elect stated she will not sign legislation that raises taxes, a position that contrasts with the previous two periods of DFL trifectas. This decision comes as the party prepares to take full control of the state legislature and executive branch.

The DFL caucus released a list of policy goals last summer that included free or low-cost child care, universal health care, and increased education funding. Estimates suggest these initiatives could cost billions of dollars. Klobuchar said she has been clear from the beginning that she will not increase taxes given Minnesota's position relative to the rest of the country. She intends to pursue an economic growth agenda while cracking down on fraud and improving efficiency.

To find savings, Klobuchar plans to start a thorough audit of state government programs on the first day of her term. She believes a top-to-bottom review will help reduce red tape and generate more resources for the state. This approach aims to balance budget priorities without raising the burden on taxpayers or businesses.

Klobuchar will continue serving in the current Congress until the session ends in December. As the ranking Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee, she hopes to help pass a farm bill to support Minnesota farmers. She also indicated that she will select the individual to succeed her in the U.S. Senate, though the timing and identity of that appointee remain undecided.
