Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a fourth term as Brazil’s president, defeating his far-right opponent Flávio Bolsonaro. The result marks a dramatic comeback for the former leader. However, the victory is being contested immediately. Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat. He has asked for the election results to be annulled.

The dispute mirrors a pattern from the past. Four years ago, Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio’s father, also refused to acknowledge his loss to Lula. That rejection led to an attempted coup and a subsequent conviction for Jair Bolsonaro. In the current election, Flávio Bolsonaro cited a specific legal trigger for his challenge. A supreme court justice decided to extend voting hours. Flávio Bolsonaro argues this change invalidates the outcome.

International observers are closely watching the reaction. World leaders are now recognizing Lula’s win. This global support suggests the challenge may not succeed. Tom Phillips, reporting from São Paulo, assessed the political atmosphere. He stated, “The Bolsonaro response is exactly as I feared, but I don’t think it will mean very much.” Phillips added that Bolsonaro likely has no hope of overturning the result.

Phillips described the election as the culmination of a long career. He called it the crescendo of an incredible, if sometimes controversial, 50-year political path. Lula was the first elected working-class leader in Brazil. His administration helped millions of people escape poverty.

The election results are now available to the public. Full coverage continues as officials process the data. The next steps involve the legal process. Flávio Bolsonaro’s team will pursue the annulment request through the courts. Meanwhile, Lula’s supporters prepare for his inauguration.

Other international news also broke on this day. In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces sealed off Hebron. This city has a population of 250,000 people. The closure followed a Friday gun attack on a military checkpoint. Two Israeli soldiers were killed in that incident. The neighborhood of Farsh al-Hawa, closest to the site, was flattened.

The Hebron municipality reported that 370 families were displaced. This amounts to nearly 2,000 people. The Israeli army stated that the displaced population left voluntarily. Yousef al-Jabari, the Hebron mayor, accused the Israeli state of collective punishment. He said, “They have dragged people from their houses, and they have prevented the media from getting into the district.”

In the United States, Alaska Senate candidate Mary Peltola delayed campaign stops. She suffered minor injuries in a car crash. Peltola and the occupant of a second vehicle were taken to a local hospital. Their injuries were non-life-threatening. Peltola is an Alaska native and former congresswoman. She aims to become the first Democrat to represent the state in the Senate in nearly two decades.

The Trump administration is already disputing the Alaska result. Attorney General Todd Blanche defended a pre-emptive lawsuit. This suit seeks to block certification of the Senate results if Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan loses. The Department of Justice alleges voter confusion because two candidates named Dan Sullivan appear on the ballot.

Elsewhere, Serbian leader Aleksandar Vučić conceded defeat in a historic election. He lost to a student-led movement that protested against his government for two years. Celebrations erupted in the streets of Belgrade after news of his departure from 12 years in power spread. Eric Bauza, the voice actor for Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, died at age 46 from hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
