Federal agents arrested Thomas Wayne Markle on Friday morning in Lakeland, Florida. The 82-year-old former lighting director is charged with one count of possessing child pornography. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
The arrest occurred in the area near Tampa. According to two people familiar with the case who spoke to The Associated Press, the charges relate to sexually explicit material involving minors. The federal complaint accuses Markle of possessing images of himself with children.
The investigation began in October of this year. Authorities received information from a person who discovered suspected abusive material among Markle's belongings in the Philippines. That individual had been clearing out Markle's former residence in Cebu City. The discovery prompted a report to local police and a notification to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Agents from the FBI later located approximately 78 items in two storage facilities in the Los Angeles area. These units had been rented by Markle since 2008. The collection included slides, photographic negatives, and books containing the alleged material. The affidavit also describes images that appear to show Markle with minors in various states of undress.
Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney, addressed the severity of the case. He stated that Markle is accused of possessing material that includes photographs of him with young girls. Essayli described the charges as extremely serious and affirmed that prosecutors would pursue the case with the full weight of federal law.
The arrest follows reports by the British tabloid The Sun. That publication stated that Meghan Markle's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., found the collection while emptying their father's house. Markle Jr. told the newspaper that he found hundreds, if not thousands, of such images. He said he reported the findings to police in the Philippines and contacted the FBI.
Meghan Markle, the former actress and wife of Prince Harry, has spoken publicly about her distress regarding the allegations. She said she was deeply pained by the discovery of the collection. She also revealed that in 2018, a letter containing concerning accusations about her father was sent to the London police. She noted that she was assured the matters were being investigated at that time.
Markle and his daughter have had a strained relationship for years. He did not attend their 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle. The couple has two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Earlier this year, Markle suffered a stroke in the Philippines that required the amputation of his left leg. This medical event forced him to return to the United States.
The federal case is now in the hands of prosecutors in Florida. The next steps in the legal process will determine the timeline for the proceedings. The storage units in Los Angeles remain the primary physical evidence in the federal complaint.
