Federal investigators have formally accused North Korea of orchestrating the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, a breach that drained more than $6 billion from the Binance exchange. The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced on Saturday that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was responsible for the extraction of these virtual assets, which occurred in a matter of minutes on or about October 29. The loss represents a substantial hit to the global digital finance sector and marks the most significant single-event theft of crypto assets to date.
The FBI linked the incident to a cyber entity known as TraderTraitor. This same group is credited with a previous heist targeting the Bybit exchange, which resulted in $1.5 billion in losses last year. Agency officials noted that they observed the actors converting the stolen wealth primarily into ethereum. The bureau expects the hackers to further launder these funds by using decentralized finance platforms and instant swap services to obscure the origins of the money before moving it to the next stage of the process.
The stolen portfolio consisted of major digital currencies, including bitcoin and ethereum. It also included stablecoins such as tether and USD Coin, which are designed to maintain a value pegged to traditional fiat currencies. The rapid movement of these assets triggered a market reaction earlier in the week. Most major cryptocurrency prices fell sharply on Friday following the news of the cyberattack, reflecting investor uncertainty about the security of digital ledgers.
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volume, responded to the breach by pledging to absorb the financial impact. The company stated on Saturday that it is deploying over $6.34 billion in corporate funds to purchase tokens. This move aims to replenish approximately 90 percent of the assets stolen in the attack. The exchange noted that the remaining 10 percent involves less liquid tokens, which may require additional time to acquire and restore to the platform's reserves.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Binance reaffirmed its commitment to its users. The company declared that it would fully cover the financial impact of the funds lost in the incident. This assurance is intended to maintain confidence in the exchange's solvency following the massive loss. The FBI has simultaneously asked various blockchain analytics companies and crypto exchanges to block transactions associated with specific addresses. This coordinated effort aims to stop the money from being laundered and to help recover the stolen value.
The incident has intensified concerns about the vulnerability of current cryptographic standards. These worries have grown as artificial intelligence models expand their capabilities in breaking complex security protocols. The FBI's identification of North Korea as the source adds a geopolitical dimension to the financial crisis. The agency's release serves as a definitive attribution for an event that previously left many in the industry guessing about the true scale and origin of the hack.
