Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult screen-tested to play James Bond, according to reports from Variety. Both actors participated in auditions for the role under the direction of Denis Villeneuve. This development places two prominent British stars in direct competition for the part following the conclusion of Daniel Craig’s fifteen-year tenure as 007.
The casting process has been a top priority for producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman since Amazon MGM Studios appointed Villeneuve as the next director of the franchise. Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, is writing the script for what is referred to as Bond 26. The studio has worked to move the project forward quickly, resulting in widespread speculation about who will step into the role next.
Both candidates possess extensive experience in major film franchises. Pattinson currently portrays Batman for DC Studios and previously starred in the Twilight and Harry Potter series. He also has a working relationship with Villeneuve, who directed him in Dune: Part Three. Hoult plays Lex Luthor in the DC Superman films and appeared in the X-Men prequel trilogy. His next release, How to Rob a Bank, hits theaters on November 13.
Press coverage has frequently mentioned other British actors in their thirties as potential contenders, including Callum Turner, Josh O'Connor, and Jack Lowden. Harry Styles is also reported to have held discussions about the part, while Theo James, 41, has not been ruled out. Pierce Brosnan recently expressed support for Turner, and Gary Oldman endorsed Lowden, noting that the latter is his co-star in Slow Horses. Oldman also claimed the next Bond has already been chosen, though no official announcement has been made.
Amazon has declined to comment on the ongoing casting rumors. The selection process remains active as the studio seeks to finalize the lead for the upcoming installment.
