Seminole County, Georgia, discovered a memory card containing uncounted ballots from Election Day, a finding that immediately changed the outcome of a close state house race. The Georgia Secretary of State’s Office issued a release confirming the error after a post-election check identified a gap between check-in records and reported cast ballots.

The discrepancy involved approximately 388 voters who recorded check-ins but whose ballots were not initially counted. Once the data from the memory card was included, the margin in District 154 shifted dramatically. Democrat challenger Harry James, who previously held a 58 vote lead, fell behind incumbent Republican Gerald Greene. Greene now leads the race by 262 votes.

The Secretary of State’s office notified the Seminole County Board of Elections about the error. The county must certify its final election results by Monday. This deadline is tight given the need to process the newly found data and ensure all records align with the physical ballots.

Brad Raffensperger’s office is currently investigating how the memory card was overlooked. The probe will also determine if required election procedures were followed and what corrective measures are necessary to prevent similar incidents in future elections. The release stated these three questions form the core of the review.

A representative from the Seminole County Board of Elections was not available for comment Friday afternoon when local news outlets reached out. The county has not yet issued a public statement explaining the specific circumstances that led to the card being set aside.
