The backyard in question covers 520 square feet.

For Freddy Godinez and Alex Stabler of Fredric Alexander, that is enough space to host a full patio party. The duo argues that outdoor gathering areas should mimic the layout of a home, dividing the space into specific zones for cooking, dining, and relaxation. They do not require a large lot or new construction to achieve this setup. Instead, the process relies on moving existing indoor elements outside.

The history of the space involves a mix of professional design and personal history. Stabler previously performed in the water-based Las Vegas show Le Rêve. He now uses that background to curate the decor. The centerpiece is a pair of upside-down mannequin legs. These pieces are not random. They serve as conversation starters that require explanation from the hosts. Godinez and Stabler state that these items should reveal the personality of the homeowner, even if the choice looks eccentric. This approach encourages guests to open up as well.

The table setting draws directly from the interior of the house. The designers place houseplants, candles, and food vessels on the outdoor tables. They use real dishes, silverware, and cloth napkins rather than single-use disposables. This choice reduces clutter and prevents items from blowing away in the wind. For households with children, the team suggests using durable plastic cups to replace glass.

The beverage station stands on a pedestal found at a thrift store. A drink dispenser sits on top, holding a batch cocktail prepared in advance. Empty glasses are arranged for guests to serve themselves. This setup removes the need for a dedicated bar area.

Furniture for the space was sourced from Facebook Marketplace. The couch frames and umbrella used in the setup were bought secondhand. The coffee table was painted to match the desired color. Godinez and Stabler recommend reupholstering outdoor cushions every two years or as needed. They pair hard furniture with soft fabrics, outdoor pillows, and throws to create comfort.

The design incorporates fire, water, and earth elements to create visual variety. Candles, tiki torches, heat lamps, or a fire pit provide the fire element. Fountains or other water features add a sense of serenity. Stone, plants, and landscaping complete the earth element. The result is a 520-square-foot space that functions as a distinct open-air sanctuary.
