The Milwaukee Brewers ended a 57-year championship drought on October 28 by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5. This victory secured their first World Series title in franchise history, ending a wait that began after they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982. The series concluded with a five-game sweep that marked a historic moment for the small-market club.

Despite the emotional significance of the win, television ratings for the 2026 World Series fell short of recent standards. Estimates indicate an average audience of 11.82 million viewers across the Fox network. This figure is a sharp decline from the 2025 series, which drew 15.49 million viewers, and the 2024 series, which attracted 15.1 million. Both previous titles were won by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Viewership fluctuated during the five-game series. Game 3, where Milwaukee won 10-1 at Tampa, recorded the lowest audience of 8.33 million. The final game, which sealed the championship, peaked at 14.22 million viewers. These numbers suggest a lack of broad national interest in a matchup between two of Major League Baseball's smaller markets.

The perceived lack of star power may explain the lower ratings. The Brewers hold the 19th highest payroll in the league at $146 million, while the Rays rank 28th with a $95 million payroll. This marked the first World Series featuring two of baseball's smallest spenders in 35 years. In contrast, the Dodgers have won the last two titles with high-profile players like Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts.

The 2026 World Series also trails other major US sports leagues in audience size. The NBA Finals, where the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 4-1, averaged 20.58 million viewers. Game 5 of that series reached 24.54 million, the highest for a Game 5 since 1998. The NFL's Super Bowl LX drew an estimated 125.6 million viewers as the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13.

International soccer also outperformed baseball this year. The 2026 FIFA World Cup final in North America saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in extra time. That match averaged 62.8 million combined viewers across Fox and Telemundo, setting a record for the most-watched football match in the United States. The NHL's 2026 Stanley Cup, won by the Carolina Hurricanes, averaged 5.2 million viewers, making it the only major US league with lower ratings than the World Series.

MLB also canceled two scheduled games in London for mid-2026. The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays were set to play at London Stadium on June 13 and 14. The cancellation resulted from scheduling conflicts with the venue's previous tenant, West Ham United, and a clash with FIFA World Cup broadcast slots on Fox. West Ham's final Premier League match on May 24 left insufficient time for field conversion, which can take up to three weeks.

Other US leagues continue to expand internationally. The NFL hosted its first game in Melbourne last month, drawing 100,021 fans. That attendance ranked as the seventh most-attended regular-season game in NFL history. The NBA regularly plays games in Paris, Abu Dhabi, and Mexico City, while the NFL maintains a presence in London, Munich, Madrid, and Mexico City.
