Ukraine's foreign minister Andrii Sybiha has outlined a specific operational plan for managing former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán should he be appointed United Nations secretary-general. Sybiha stated that if Orbán takes the top UN post, he will likely utilize the veto and blackmail tactics he has refined during years of blocking major European Union decisions.

The Ukrainian official framed this potential management strategy as a simple invitation to coffee. He referenced a specific incident at an EU summit in late 2023, where Orbán physically left the meeting room to allow other leaders to approve the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine without a Hungarian veto.

"We can share with the rest of the world our great experience of taking him out for coffee at the right moment," Sybiha wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The comment followed reports that the US administration is actively promoting Orbán for the UN role, relying on support from China and Russia.

Sybiha expressed confidence that Orbán would apply the same pressure tactics at the UN that he used within the EU. The foreign minister's remarks provide a concrete view of how Kyiv intends to handle a diplomatic rival in a global forum.

The potential appointment is part of a larger discussion regarding Orbán's political future. Investigative journalists reported in May that figures within the MAGA wing of the US Republican Party considered a scenario where a UN appointment would shield Orbán from prosecution in Hungary. Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi added that Orbán is preparing to move to the United States if legal action begins in his home country.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that the US administration is backing Orbán's bid. Sybiha's comments signal that Ukraine views the coffee break not as a social gesture, but as a proven procedural tool to secure favorable outcomes in multilateral negotiations.
