Adults who anticipate needing assistance with medical choices must designate a person to act on their behalf when they cannot make decisions themselves. This legal role, known as a medical power of attorney, grants the designated agent authority over several aspects of daily life and long-term care.

Sam Cradduck, a gerontologist, explained that the scope of this authority extends well beyond clinical treatment. The agent determines whether a patient enters a skilled facility for rehabilitation after surgery, moves into assisted living, or remains in a private home. The role also involves selecting specific caregivers.

Cradduck emphasized that the chosen individual must prioritize the patient’s documented preferences over their own opinions. She stated that the agent must "advocate for your wishes, not for their heart’s desire." This distinction is critical because the agent’s decisions will directly shape the patient’s remaining quality of life and living situation.

In a separate segment, health experts discussed the prevalence of chronic dry mouth among the elderly. According to the American Dental Association, the condition affects 30% of adults aged 65 and older. Among adults aged 80 and older, the rate rises to 40%.

Dr. Rhea Rogers, a board-certified physician, listed several potential causes for the condition. These include dehydration, nerve damage, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and specific medications. Rogers noted that dry mouth can appear as an early symptom in individuals who are otherwise healthy. Identifying the root cause is the first step in managing the issue.

Dr. Nathaniel Mann, a Prisma Health emergency doctor, highlighted the benefits of outdoor exposure for mental and physical health. Mann, who practices wilderness medicine, suggested that medical professionals should prescribe time outside to patients in the same manner they prescribe medication. He argued that even short daily doses of nature can help ease anxiety.

The discussion also touched on the preservation of traditional crafts in New Orleans. Darryl Reeves, a blacksmith, continues a family tradition of ironworking that spans generations. Reeves said the physical act of working with metal provides a sense of joy and serves as an outlet for frustration.
