Prince George's County police arrested a suspect on November 4 in a shooting that claimed a third life in the Langley Park area within a single week. The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. on Tuesday morning on 15th Avenue.
Officers identified the suspect as Marcos Melendez Umanzor, 20. He faces charges for the death of Annie Davalos, 13, and the critical injury of a 14-year-old girl. Records indicate Davalos had been reported missing in Montgomery County prior to the shooting.
Chief George Nader stated that investigators believe the two victims knew the suspect. He described the incident as stemming from an argument, though the specific motive remains under review. Nader noted that six of the seven recent homicides in the county involved personal disputes.
County Executive Aisha Braveboy addressed the public following the arrest. She expressed grief for Davalos's family and the community members who had prayed for her safe return. Braveboy confirmed that police are investigating potential gang connections in the Langley Park killings.
The arrest adds to a cluster of violence that has raised local concern. In less than one week, the county recorded seven homicides. The previous week included the discovery of an 18-year-old man's body at Langley Hampshire Neighborhood Park in Hyattsville on October 29.
County crime statistics show 40 homicides so far in 2026. This figure represents a 27 percent drop compared to the same period last year. Officials said they are launching an anti-violence campaign and have increased police patrols in Langley Park.
Nader urged residents to pause during conflicts before they escalate into physical violence. He emphasized that solving a dispute with a gun is not the desired outcome. The department continues to pursue leads to ensure those involved are held accountable.
