Russell Brand was convicted of rape and sexual assault on Thursday, ending a trial that examined allegations spanning more than 20 years. Judge Joel Bennathan stated that Brand faces a "significant" prison sentence, which is scheduled to be handed down on Monday. The judge denied a request for bail, citing the risk that Brand might flee, and the 51-year-old was taken into custody.

The jury, composed of eight men and four women, deliberated for more than eight hours across two days before returning its verdict. Brand was found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault. As the guilty verdict for the rape count was read, Brand closed his eyes but showed no other visible emotion. After bail was denied, he gestured to his legal team and repeatedly said, "I'm good, I'm good, I'm good," before being led away.

Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones described Brand as a ruthless, calculating, and manipulative sexual predator during the trial. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London's Metropolitan Police said the conviction reflected the courage of the women who came forward. Furphy noted that Brand used his influence and fame to exploit women, adding that his sense of entitlement grew as his profile increased.

Brand denied the charges and testified that while he had led a promiscuous life as a young man, he never forced anyone to act against their will. His lawyers argued that the victims were undermined by reporting the assaults only after a 2023 documentary aired with anonymous allegations. Brand stated that the case had consumed his life and that friends and colleagues had abandoned him. His wife, Laura, testified as a character witness, but Brand claimed no one with relevant evidence was willing to support his defense.

The convictions relate to incidents in 2004, 2005, and 2009. Brand was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at a London bar in 2004, though he was cleared of orally raping her in a restroom. He was also convicted of kissing and groping a woman at a radio station in 2004 or 2005 and anally raping a fan backstage at a comedy show in 2009. The final conviction involved a woman who said Brand demanded a massage and pressed his face into her groin during an advertisement recording in 2009.

Brand was acquitted of charges related to a 1999 incident at the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth and an alleged assault at the London office of music channel MTV. He is known for stand-up comedy, television hosting, and films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In recent years, he moved to Florida and built an online following by mixing wellness topics with conspiracy theories.

Judge Bennathan acknowledged the hardship the case has caused Brand's children but stated that the difficulty resulted from their father's serious criminal offending. Brand was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry and has since moved away from mainstream media.
