Qatari mediators flew into Tehran on Friday as part of a coordinated effort with Washington to reopen negotiations over a ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that the delegation is led by the senior adviser to Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. The visit follows the delivery of a letter from US Vice President JD Vance to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei on Sunday. A Qatari delegation carried that correspondence, which proposed a new diplomatic process aimed at preventing another round of US strikes.
The Vance letter was reportedly well received, though Al Jazeera's Resul Serdar, reporting from Tehran, said there has been no official reaction from the capital. Sources told Serdar the tone was much more respectful than earlier correspondence from the US administration, an approach Iranian authorities welcomed. Serdar said the Qatari group is thought to have traveled to collect Iran's response and to explain a potential new diplomatic path.
The outreach comes as Washington sends mixed signals. According to The Wall Street Journal, US President Donald Trump has advised Gulf allies to prepare for a brief, high-intensity military campaign after next week's US midterm elections. An informed source quoted by that newspaper said neither the letter nor follow-up discussions addressed specific peace terms, describing the exchange only as a potential framework for negotiations.
Sources told Al Jazeera a meeting could be held within a week, in either Doha or Istanbul.
