Russell Brand has been taken into police custody following a jury verdict that found him guilty of rape and sexual assault. The 51-year-old actor and comedian was convicted Thursday at Southwark Crown Court in London. Judge Joel Bennathan rejected a request for bail, citing the risk that Brand might flee. Brand is now expected to receive a prison term when he is sentenced on Monday.

The jury of eight men and four women deliberated for more than eight hours across two days. They found Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two additional rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault. The charges stem from allegations made by four women regarding incidents that occurred between 1999 and 2009.

Brand closed his eyes when the guilty verdict for the rape count was read aloud. He showed no other visible emotion. After the judge denied bail, Brand gestured to his legal team and repeatedly told them, "I'm good, I'm good, I'm good," before being led away by officers.

Judge Bennathan addressed the impact of the custody order on Brand's children during the proceedings. "I regret the hardship caused to the children, of course," the judge stated. He added that the hardship resulted from "serious criminal offending by their father."

During the trial, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones described Brand as a ruthless, calculating, and manipulative sexual predator. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London's Metropolitan Police commented on the outcome, stating that the conviction demonstrated the courage and determination of the women who reported the incidents. Furphy noted that Brand used his influence and fame to exploit women, adding that his sense of entitlement grew as his profile expanded.

Brand testified in his own defense, denying the charges. He told the court that he had been obsessed with sex as a young man and had led a promiscuous life, but he maintained that he never forced anyone to do something against their will. He said the criminal case had a devastating impact on his life and family, noting that his entire life had been consumed by the events and allegations. His wife, Laura, served as a character witness, but Brand stated that no one with relevant evidence was willing to testify on his behalf.

The convictions involve specific incidents spanning a decade. The jury found Brand guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at a London bar in 2004. He was also found guilty of kissing and groping a woman at a London radio station in 2004 or 2005. A third conviction involved the anal rape of a fan he met backstage at a comedy show in 2009. The final conviction was for sexually assaulting a woman who said he demanded a massage and pressed his face into her groin during an advertisement recording in 2009.

Brand was cleared of raping a woman in a hotel room in Bournemouth in 1999. He was also acquitted of attempting to indecently assault a woman by dragging her into a men's bathroom at the London office of MTV. The defense argued that the victims were undermined by reporting the assaults to police only years later, following a 2023 documentary that featured anonymous allegations against Brand.

Brand rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a stand-up comedian and host of television programs and a BBC radio show. He appeared in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek and was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry. In recent years, he moved to Florida and built an online following with videos focusing on wellness, conspiracy theories, and religious devotion. British law protects the identities of the victims from media disclosure for life.
