Steven Martin was struck in the head by a stray bullet that pierced the wall of his family home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Doctors initially told his parents the boy might never walk, talk, or eat independently again.

The family has relocated to Sioux Falls, S.D., to access specialized pediatric care. This move was necessary because Steven requires a low-stimulation environment to continue his recovery. He is currently paralyzed on his left side following multiple strokes that occurred after the shooting.

His parents report that Steven continues to reach new milestones despite the severity of his initial injuries. However, the financial burden of his care is mounting. Medical expenses are not fully covered by insurance, and the family requires specialized equipment and ongoing therapy.

The strain on the family is compounded by Steven's father, who is battling cancer while working odd jobs to support the household. The Martin family has relaunched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for these specific needs.

The campaign aims to cover medical supplies, specialized nutrition, transportation, and general living expenses. The parents describe their son's progress as a miracle, noting that while every day presents new challenges, it also brings signs of improvement.
