TikTok launched a new dining feature called Must Eat on Wednesday, aiming to compete directly with established platforms like Yelp and Google Maps. The tool allows users to find restaurants, read crowdsourced reviews, and make reservations without leaving the social media app. It marks a significant expansion of TikTok's utility beyond short-form video content.

The new section is built on a database of 40 million posts, reviews, and comments about dining experiences. Users can search for nearby businesses on a map, filter options by rating, distance, cuisine type, and current availability, and leave their own reviews. Each restaurant page links directly to relevant videos posted on the platform, connecting discovery with visual content. Diners can also bookmark specific spots for future visits.

TikTok US CEO Adam Presser described the feature as a compilation of conversations happening across the platform among creators, restaurateurs, and individual users. He stated that Must Eat brings together all the dialogue occurring about local restaurants within the app. The company noted that restaurants cannot pay for placement in the recommendation lists, keeping the curation organic based on user engagement and content volume.

The feature is currently available in New York City, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area. It is divided into two main categories: everyday eats and elevated dining. In New York, the initial featured list includes Golden Diner, known for viral pancakes, as well as high-demand spots like Semma and Via Carota. This launch positions TikTok as a middle ground between comprehensive directories like Yelp and curated editorial lists from publications such as The Infatuation.

This move expands on TikTok's earlier efforts to connect online content with in-person visits. Earlier this year, the company introduced TikTok Go, which allowed users to book hotels and attractions and let creators tag specific locations. Must Eat extends that functionality to the restaurant industry, building on the platform's existing influence over local food trends. Content creators have increasingly acted as informal food critics, with their videos often driving traffic to specific establishments.

TikTok cited data in its press release showing that 27 million US diners visited a restaurant, cafe, or shop for the first time last year because of the platform. The app has also influenced menu design, with restaurants adopting visually dramatic presentations like long cheese pulls to appeal to video viewers. By integrating reservations and reviews, TikTok is attempting to capture the full journey from discovery to dining, further embedding itself in the local hospitality economy.
